VERSION 3

An appropriate decoration of the huge pop stage set up next to the Grote Kerk was a challenge to say the least. I decided to consider the construction as an elevated orchestra pit. The extension of stepped stage decks placed against the front of the stage and the strip located between stage and grandstand made up the playing field. To optically soften the harsh contrast between the elegant Grote Kerk and the clunky pop stage, I chose to clad the vertical visible sides of the deck construction with imitation brick panels and to cover the treads with floor slabs, decorated like bluestone.

This time most of the costume design fell. Maria was no longer a fixed physical role figure on stage. In the latest version, she spoke through letters. The soloists who initially played the main characters had been replaced by alternating players, who temporarily identified with that character by putting on a costume or wielding a prop. The capes that referred to Maria, Otto, Willem and Frederico were hung over four standards, which were set up at the edge of the playing field.

On February 10, 2022, David, Pieter and Arnold pinned down the design. The Dordrecht artist Boy Bastiaans would carry out the set design.
