Mijn oom heeft mij, door mij het afgelopen jaar zijn ziekteproces te laten documenteren, veel geleerd over waar het fotografische beeld als document begint en waar het ophoudt. De sequentie Tussentijd is een audiovisuele en tekstuele interpretatie van zijn ziekte, acute leukemie. Tegelijkertijd is de sequentie onderdeel van mijn onlangs geschreven doctoraalscriptie over context, ruimte en intertekstualiteit in het fotografische en cinematografische beeld. De sequentie Tussentijd maakt als audiovisuele en tekstuele constructie, dat het documentaire fotografische beeld niet afzonderlijk, maar in samenspel met tekst, geluid en montagetechniek, als onderdeel van een nieuw gevormd contextueel geheel, het ziekteproces van mijn oom verbeeldt. Beeldfragmenten van het strand, het ziekenhuis, mijn oom en het huis van mijn oom verbeelden, in relatie tot de tekst- en het geluid, het verloop van zijn ziekte.
De sequentie construeert zo een nieuwe documentaire ruimte, die aan de hand van intertekstualiteit tussen de beeld-, audio- en tekstfragmenten, het fotografische beeld metaforisch betekenissen laat genereren.
Waar voor mij het beeld de ernst van de situatie niet weerspiegelt, maar slechts een incompleet beeld van mijn ooms mensonwaardige toestand schetst, laat ik het woord beginnen. Daar waar het woord de ernst van de situatie niet meer verwoordt, begint dàt wat is. Dit is niet in woord of beeld te vangen. Zowel het woord als het beeld blijven er namelijk een artistieke interpretatie van. Het fotografische beeld als document functioneert hooguit als tussenruimte - een ruimte die de discrepantie tussen dat wat men interpreteert en dàt wat is, soms vereffent, maar niet opheft.
By allowing me to document the course of his disease, bloodcancer, my uncle taught me a lot about where the photographic image as a document begins and ends. The sequence Beyond Time is an audio-visual and textual interpretation of his illness, acute leukemia. At the same time it is, as part of my recently finished doctoral script, an empiric research after context, space and intertextuality in the photographic and cinematographic image. The sequence as an audio- visual and textual construction creates a new documentary environment, a different contextual space. Images of the beach, the hospital, my uncle and the living environment of my uncle alternate and represent, in relation to the text and the sound of the sea, the course of my uncle's illness.
The intertextuality between these audio, text, and photographic fragments causes that the photographic images generate metaphoric meaning. The context of the images fuses with the context - the visual interpretation of an illness - of the sequence.
Where the visual image would only reveal an incomplete portrait of the degrading situation, the text starts. The moment the text is not capable to unveil the pain and the suffering, the reality of the situation takes over. In the end, the documentary images as well as the words, are not capable to reveal this reality cause they remain a visual interpretation. This documentary functions as an interspace - a space which settles but not liquidates the gap between interpretation and reality.
