INTRODUCTION
Der Fliegende Holländer (the Flying Dutchman) is a romantic opera in three acts composed by Richard Wagner. Many consider the work as a break-through of his own style. The opera was completed in 1841 and premiered with moderate succes in Dresden on January 2, 1843. After four performances it was already removed from the programme. In spite of its moderate success, two other opera houses staged 'der Fliegende Holländer' half a year after its premiere: Riga (June 3, 1843) and Kassel ( June 5, 1843). Performances in Berlin (1844), Zürich (1852), Prague (1856), Vienna (1860), Munich (1864), Rotterdam (1869) and Innsbruck (2007) followed.
