'We settle to become hosts.'

Letter by Andre Dekker to Ruud Reutelingsperger, sent at the end of 1996 from Arnhem to New York in preparation for the Observatory project, New York 1997.

"I fitted the letter with 'bookdarts', a wonderful product from the US, that you clip to the paper. The brass markers indicate the places where US in any form is mentioned. The silver markers indicate the plans for the Observatory in the US. The pen drawing is made in 2004.

In my archive I found a letter to Ruud Reutelingsperger, who lived in New York, and had prepared the first free-standing Observatory. I write that our work (we did not yet know that we will build a house made of bookshelves, a place for seclusion in the park of Snug Harbor Cultural Center) might consist of setting up camp, exploring, building and inviting guests. 'We settle to become hosts.'

I added a drawing, a kind of calligraphy, representing New York towers. This addition makes the contribution ambiguous and perhaps even complex or unclear. I violate the rules of the arts, such as: "it is what it is" and "show only one theme". But I want to incorporate different situations and themes. I think that confusion means more than a point of view or a simple statement or, in this case, only the letter with information about my temporary US citizenship. Let it collide and bounce. There is a stain on the drawing that reminds some of the catastrophe. And all is contained in a very nice frame."
